Urucuia Grande Sertão
Inspired by the work of Luís da Câmara Cascudo, and written by Eridiana Rosa and Luiz Fernando Pinto and directed by Marcia do Valle, the play won best play, best direction, best actor in a leading role, best actress in a supporting role and best lighting at the Rio de Janeiro Theater Festival. It was also featured in Mostra Fringe, at the Curitiba Festival, and in Festival Sesc de Inverno and National Theater Festival of Juiz de Fora.
The play was staged in a number of theaters in Rio de Janeiro as part of the State Secretary for Culture’s Viva a Arte (Celebrate the Art) program in 2015/2016. It also played at four towns in the countryside of the state of Minas Gerais as part of Petrobras Cultural Dissemination program (Programa Petrobras Distribuidora de Cultura). Finally, the play was staged in a number of public spaces as part of the Ministry of Culture’s Microprojetos Mais Cultura para Territórios de Paz (Microprojects More Culture for Peace Territories) grant and the Municipal Secretary for Culture’s Fomento Cidade Olímpica (Incentives to the Olympic City).
Plot summary
In a kingdom deep in the Brazilian countryside, a lonely and widowed king, influenced by his old age and his desire to have grandchildren, determines that his loyal servant find a suitable young man to marry the princess. After the announcement, a great number of suitors come from all over the country. This makes the king hopeful, in spite of the resistance put up by the princess, who considers herself as the most intelligent woman in the whole empire. Is there a young man who is honored and clever enough to marry the princess?
The text aims at instigating the imagination and critical thinking of the audience in a sensitive and poetic way, by offering many possibilities of exercising creativity, especially to a younger audience.
