Cine Vila
Since April 2016, the Tobias Barreto Square, in Vila Isabel, hosts Cine Vila, a film society that acts as a site for encounters and exchange around audiovisual production. Monthly sessions include short films and feature films, promoting dialogues between the audience and the film producers and between visual arts and photography exhibitions and VJ projections.
The Tobias Barreto Square, as a site for intimacy, has become a space for experimentation building upon different possibilities of action. The idea for Cine Vila arose from a desire to realize the place’s potential and to provoke people passing by and from other parts of the city to share and create links with this space.
Cine Vila is part of a movement that recognizes the importance of culturally occupying public spaces. As an open and independent space for audiovisual producers, we believe in the democratization of opportunities and in the possibility of coordinated creation and action.
At a time when movies are being shown at shopping malls and street cinemas are vanishing, cinema goes to the streets, squares and public spaces, independent production circulates and other possibilities for showing movies emerge. Cine Vila is a result of this context and adds to a vast list of interesting initiatives in this direction.
